Screen Door Repair for Hinged Doors
Sagging frames, torn mesh, a closer that slams or a latch that never catches. We fix hinged screen doors on Oahu, and replace the whole door when repair stops making sense.
What are the signs a screen door needs work?
Hinged screen doors tend to fail in a predictable order. The mesh goes first. Then the hinges work loose, and a door left to drag for months can twist its own frame. Catching it early keeps the fix small.
Drags at the latch
The free corner has dropped. Loose or stripped hinge screws are the usual cause, and sometimes a frame that has racked out of square.
Slams shut
A pneumatic closer set too fast or too hard. The dial on the end of its tube changes both.
Never quite latches
Either the closer is set too soft, or the door has sagged enough that the latch no longer lines up with its catch.
Torn or baggy mesh
Pets, kids and age punch through it. Cloth that bags out also means the spline has hardened and shrunk in its groove.
Wobbly corners
Lighter frames lean on friction-fit corner pieces that loosen with use, and once they go the whole door flexes.
Soft wood at hinges
On older wood doors and jambs, screws spinning in punky wood can point to rot or termite damage underneath.
What happens on a door repair visit?
Most hinged door work is done right at your doorway, and it starts with finding out why the door misbehaves, not only where.
Diagnose
We swing the door, check the gap along the latch side, test each hinge screw and watch how the closer brings it home. That separates hinge, frame and closer faults.
Plan the fix
Some doors need only snug hinges and a closer tweak. Others need fresh mesh, a diagonal brace, or a new door altogether. You hear which, and why.
Price in writing
The price is written down before work begins, listing parts and labor, so a simple repair never turns into a replacement without your say.
Repair and test
Hinges get tightened, the frame comes back square, mesh goes in smooth, and the closer is set to shut the door firmly without a bang.
Fixes that suit Honolulu doorways
A screen door takes more use than any window screen, along with the knocks that come with it. Our approach is simple. Repair what can be repaired, and say plainly when a door has reached the end of its life. Either way, the work is explained before it starts.
Hinges before anything
Tightening loose hinge screws often cures a sag outright, so that gets checked before any part is ordered or any brace goes on.
Closers set, not swapped
A pneumatic closer that slams can usually be tamed with its adjustment dial. The hold-open washer on the rod gets a look too.
Mesh matched to the doorway
Standard fiberglass, or pet-resistant mesh where a dog or cat leans on the lower half of the door every day.

Does a new screen door need a permit in Honolulu?
In most cases, no permit is needed. Honolulu's Ordinance 23-13, adopted in 2023, added exterior screen doors on houses and on individual apartment units to the list of work exempt from a building permit, unless the opening must be fire-rated. Treat that as general information, not a ruling on any one door or building. Condo owners still answer to their association, because under Hawaii law a unit's own exterior doors normally count as its limited common element, and altering the building's look can require board approval. We repair and rescreen hinged screen doors, adjust hinges, closers and latches, and replace doors that cannot be saved.

Sagging doors, fixed in the right order
Start at the hinges. A door that drops at the latch corner is most often hanging on loose or stripped screws, and those get dealt with before anything else is touched. It is the cheapest fix, and frequently the only one needed.
If the hinges are tight and the door still drags, the frame itself has racked out of square. The usual cure is a diagonal brace, or a turnbuckle cable run from the top hinge corner down to the bottom latch corner, which draws the low corner back up.
On older homes around Kaimuki, Wahiawa or Ewa Beach, look closely at the wood around the hinges. Wet wood invites rot and termites, and a screw that spins without biting can be the first clue. Better to find that before a new door is hung on it.
